Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest has been awarded a $2.65 million grant from the City of Spokane to operate the Housing and Essential Needs (HEN) program, effective January 1, 2016. The HEN program, previously operated by Salvation Army, serves individuals determine by DSHS to have short-term disabilities and are unable to work. The program provides rental and utility assistance. It can also provide non-food basic household commodities such as cleaning supplies, housewares, and other necessary household items.

It is anticipated the program will serve 1000 individuals annually. Individuals are referred to the HEN program by the Washington Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).

“The HEN program is the only program available in our community to assist this population group,” explains Clark Brekke, President/CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest.

The City of Spokane funds the HEN program using pass-through funds from the Washington State Department of Commerce.

Goodwill is working closely with the City of Spokane and the Salvation Army to ensure that services transfer smoothly. Goodwill has received numerous inquiries from participants and partner agencies since the grant was approved by the City Council on November 23.
