“She makes me feel like I am needed in her life and I love being that constant and strong role model to her.”
Mentor Katelyn Acker and her match Bridjette Vaughn are nearly inseparable. When she first joined MAPS, Bridjette was shy, but she has really opened up. Now there is a rock-solid friendship between the girls. Girl time is critical as Bridjette lives with just her father and brother. Tough subjects sometime come up in conversation and talking with a girlfriend is treasured. According to Katelyn, “She makes me feel like I am needed in her life and I love being that constant and strong role model to her.” We get to see the evidence of this great mentoring relationship each day in their smiling faces.
While in high school Katelyn worked two years as a teaching intern at an elementary school. She is now studying at Eastern Washington University toward a career in social work. Her goal is to work with Child Protective Services and the foster care system. Always positive, Katelyn has been a model mentor with MAPS for nearly a year. She worked with several kids in the beginning, but then began bonding with Bridjette until a natural match took place. Her enthusiasm is evident in our daily activities and she is effective in motivating kids to get engaged.
Katelyn loves every aspect of mentoring. When asked about a memorable moment at MAPS, she claimed “every moment I get to spend with Bridjette and the other kids at MAPS is a memorable moment.” She is passionate about children and wants to make a positive impact on as many youth as possible. She has made a great start at focusing her life for this purpose. Katelyn recently commented, “Maps is the high point of my week. How many people can say that they get the opportunity to mentor a great kiddo and in return be mentored right back?”
