When I first found out I needed to be in classes 20 hours a week at Working Solutions to continue receiving food stamp assistance, I freaked out. “When am I going to find the time to get everything done?” … It was a challenge to prioritize my time, but once I surrendered into the program, I started to see the benefits of being here.
The mock interviews class was great preparation to get me in the mindset of thinking on my feet, and [it was] perfect timing as I had an interview the next day.
Joe, my case manager, has spent nearly every day taking time to answer my questions and help tailor my resume to perfection. Wanda has had more patience with me than I deserved. She is truly an earth angel. When Michelle approached me to write my story, I felt like a million bucks.
Another benefit of the program that really boosted my self-confidence was the voucher to spend at Goodwill. I recently relocated from Alaska and had absolutely nothing that fit me for the warm weather here. I spent close to four hours clothes shopping until I found several complete outfits appropriate for interviews and my new employment. While trying on clothes, there was a moment when the commercial came over the loud speaker about Goodwill changing lives, and I began to cry. I am totally one of those people.
I left that day with a new wardrobe full of confidence and began networking in the community. A few days later, I found a job housekeeping for a beautiful vacation rental property that exempted me from the program. Finding employment was a mixed bag. While it is amazing to have an income, I found I really missed coming in and spending time with everyone in the office here. In fact, I am here now even though I don’t have to be.
I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with the entire staff here. Thank you for helping change this life.
